Herbal Medicine For Sex: What's Effective and Safe?

Writer: Stella OsseStella Osse

There are herbs and supplements available that may help increase sexual drive and enhance sexual performance, but before making your purchase of herbal Viagra, make sure it will meet its promises of effectiveness and safety.

Damiana (also called Horny Goat Weed) may help boost libido; however, more research needs to be conducted. Yohimbe is often recommended as an aphrodisiac but may significantly increase blood pressure and heart rate. Ginkgo biloba promotes blood circulation to stimulate and energize the body.

Tribulus Terrestris

Tribulus Terrestris is an herb used in ancient Greece, China, and India (Ayurved medicine). The herb was commonly recommended to treat impotence and low sexual desire disorders, with one study reporting improved orgasms and sexual desire among men taking Tribulus Terrestris for 12 weeks compared with those not taking any such supplement; however, another research paper stated it had no impact on testosterone production or improved erections.

Herbal medicine offers numerous therapeutic properties and is often combined with other herbs to maximize their effects. Saponins present in this herb are considered immunomodulatory, aphrodisiac, anti-urolithic, absorption enhancers, and cardioprotective; additional studies have demonstrated its liver protective effects and anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and anticancer benefits.

Studies have demonstrated that gross saponins extracted from Tribulus Terrestris can protect from ischemic brain injury. Furthermore, Tribulus terrestris has also been shown to lower the risk for calcium oxalate kidney stones while inhibiting crystallization. Finally, Tribulus terrestris has been shown to possess hepatoprotective properties, helping prevent liver oxidative damage in rats.

Tribulus Terrestris is available as an ingredient in several herbal supplements and multi-ingredient formulas used to treat male sexual dysfunction. In general, it has few side effects and should be taken for long-term use if looking to enhance sexual function or build muscle; it will not improve libido in women nor increase muscle mass, though.

Asparagus

Many secondary metabolites produced by plants to protect themselves against pathogens, insects, and parasites also have medicinal properties for humans. Asparagus contains antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory metabolites that contribute to its medicinal qualities for humans. These metabolites account for their antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory qualities; their roots have been known to reduce digestive inflammation, while their leaves treat diarrhea. A recent study demonstrated that its methanolic extract has vigorous antimycobacterial activity and is abundant in saponins and steroids, providing antidiuretic effects for humans.

The plant is widely utilized in herbal medicine for sex and other reproductive ailments, namely blood flow issues. Studies suggest it may help prevent erectile dysfunction and increase fertility; its estrogen-like properties make it helpful in treating symptoms associated with menopause, such as hot flashes and vaginal dryness; its roots also promote urination/expulsion of urine, which is useful to those experiencing bladder problems.

Asparagus is an aphrodisiac and is often prescribed during menstrual symptoms such as low libido and vaginal dryness. When combined with Ashwagandha, it becomes an effective tonic for women. It is known as Shatavari or Satavar in Ayurveda formulations; one of its uses includes treating menopausal symptoms.

Avocados

Avocados are nutrient-rich, providing healthy fats and vitamin E to support male libido. Furthermore, potassium helps regulate blood pressure and boost energy levels; avocados contain the plant compound oleic acid, which may reduce oxidative stress in men.

Maca root, a flowering plant native to Peru, can promote both female and male sexual arousal by supporting sexual drive and increasing sexual desire. Its ground-up roots have been used as a supplement to boost sexual drive. Maca also contains several critical phytonutrients like the steroidal saponins spirostanol and furostanol, as well as alkaloids related to b-carboline, contributing to its effectiveness.

Ginkgo biloba, an adaptogenic herb known to help the body cope with environmental stresses, has also been shown to aid sex drive. Nourishing reproductive health while energizing when fatigued and soothing when overanxious are among its numerous therapeutic uses, while stimulating sexual hormones and increasing circulation may all work to increase sensual stimulation.

Yohimbe (Pausinystalia Yohimbe) is another herb known to promote sexual desire and stimulate arousal by dilation of blood vessels, increasing circulation to the penis and leading to erections. Furthermore, it serves as an effective treatment for erectile dysfunction in men.

Pomegranate

Pomegranates have long been seen as a symbol of fertility and sexuality. While their romantic and seductive reputation as an aphrodisiac might just be anecdotal, studies have demonstrated that they can increase testosterone levels to help increase male and female libido. Furthermore, zinc's presence helps increase sperm count, improve mood, and encourage blood flow.

Pomegranate seeds can be enjoyed raw as snacks or added to green salads and grain bowls to boost nutrients and fiber quickly. You can even use them in juices, smoothies, and other beverages! Pomegranate seeds are often available at health food stores pre-packed in bags with their white membrane removed; if this method suits you best, rinse and strain before consumption to ensure only seeds appear!

Pomegranate has been demonstrated as a potent antioxidant that may protect against cardiovascular disease and erectile dysfunction and possibly lower the risk of prostate cancer in men. Pomegranate extract has even been demonstrated to slow down and even stop some forms of prostate cancer cells' proliferation - potentially killing them off altogether.

Conclusion

Horny goat weed (Turnera diffusa) may help women increase sexual desire by relaxing the clitoris and may prevent menopausal symptoms like hot flashes and vaginal dryness that inhibit libido. Meanwhile, maca root may enhance sexuality by relieving fatigue and stimulating hormone production.
