The Ultimate Guide to Using Herbal Products for a Better Sex Life

As Valentine's Day nears, drugstore aisles are filled with herbal products claiming to enhance sexual potency - many of them useless, according to urologist Michael O'Leary.

However, certain herbs and vitamins may help boost libido in both women and men. Natural aphrodisiacs worth trying include Tritus terrestris, Ginkgo biloba extract, maca root, ashwagandha root, and saffron.

Damiana

Damiana, or yellow flowering plant with aphrodisiac properties, may help men maintain higher testosterone levels by raising levels in women while simultaneously improving sex drive through reduced stress and improved blood flow via its ability to regulate nitric oxide production within the body. Damiana can also be used to treat sexual dysfunctions and maintain erectile function for men (1).

At least this herbal supplement is widely known for improving sexual performance and increasing libido, with additional claims of relieving symptoms associated with menopause/perimenopause, such as hot flashes and vaginal dryness. Unfortunately, however, scientific evidence does not support its efficacy.

Ginkgo

Ginkgo biloba (GBE), commonly used in Chinese herbal products for sex, contains more than 40 components, two of which - flavonoids and terpenoids - may provide medicinal effects. Today's researcher’s focus on GBE made from its dried green leaves as the basis for research studies.

Ginkgo may help boost women's libido. According to one study, Ginkgo biloba was 84% effective at treating antidepressant-induced sexual dysfunction due to selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Gingko could interact with certain medications, including blood thinners and ibuprofen, which may increase bleeding risks or lead to serotonin syndrome - a potentially fatal condition related to serotonin overload.

Maca Root

Maca root (Lepidium meyenii), found in the central Andes, has long been used as a tonic to support hormonal balance, fertility, stamina and self-rated sexual desire in men. Maca may also help ease menopausal symptoms.

Studies have demonstrated that maca can increase sperm count, concentration and motility among men; however, these studies were small, so more research needs to be conducted in this field.

Maca is also known to help alleviate anxiety and depression; it acts as an adaptogenic herb, allowing the body to adapt to stress better while increasing energy, mood, and memory. Maca can either be taken in capsule form or eaten whole.

Saffron

Saffron has long been considered nature's key to increasing libido. Legends and tradition speak to its power; now, science confirms it. Multiple studies have found that it helps men and women experiencing sexual dysfunction to experience improved results from taking it.

Saffron increases nitric oxide production, helping blood vessels relax and improve erections. Additionally, its mood-enhancing properties may indirectly boost libido.

When purchasing saffron, always look for quality. Iranian saffron typically boasts the highest grade, while Spain produces some outstanding varieties. When purchasing, look for pre-stranded rather than ground varieties and ISO or country of origin certifications.

Fenugreek Seeds

Fenugreek seeds (Trigonella foenum-graecum Linn), belonging to the pea family, have long been used for culinary and medicinal applications. Fenugreek contains numerous bioactive components, including steroid saponins, phytoestrogens, alkaloids, flavonoids, and proteins (see table).

Studies have demonstrated their ability to reduce triglycerides and cholesterol in the blood while increasing high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and possessing ant hyperglycemic properties.

Fenugreek seeds may help restore low libido caused by decreased testosterone and sperm levels, although professional advice should always be sought before taking this route. Fenugreek should be combined with a healthy diet and exercise regime for maximum effect.

Garlic

Garlic has long been used as an effective natural aphrodisiac. Packed full of allicin, garlic helps men increase testosterone levels and enhance sperm count while also serving as a potency aphrodisiac for women. Garlic has long been utilized around the world as an herbal solution.

Garlic can help enhance sexual pleasure for women by balancing hormones and increasing levels of nitric oxide. Furthermore, garlic serves as an effective natural treatment against yeast infections as well as vaginal lubrication.

Conclusion

Garlic can generally be consumed safely; however, excessive intake may cause stomach upset and bad breath. Furthermore, some individuals may have allergic reactions, including skin rashes or respiratory complications from excessive garlic intake.
